What’s new?

Here are the features added compared to the previous beta:

:warning: Breaking changes

  • The “.artoverflow” document format has evolved. Previously saved “.artoverflow” documents are not compatible with ArtOverflow Beta 3. Either continue editing them with ArtOverflow Beta 2 or save them in another format such as TIFF (in such case layers won’t be preserved) then open them in ArtOverflow Beta 3.

Bugfixes

  • A bug causing strokes to occasionally appear unexpectedly between the end of the previous stroke and the beginning of a new stroke has been fixed.

General

  • Memory usage when adding tons of layers is up to 10 times lower. This means much less freezes/stutters when running low on RAM or video memory.

Undo

  • Addition and removal of layers can be undone. This means you can now almost* fully undo your drawing back to a white canvas and rebuild it completely, a bit like a timelapse! Note that closing the document still discards this undo history.
    • *Name changes on layers are still not part of the undo history.
  • Keeping Cmd+Z pressed will now display all the undo steps live, instead of waiting for you to release Cmd+Z.

Layers

  • Layers now have an opacity setting. It can be changed by dragging horizontally on the displayed opacity value.
  • Reordering layers with drag & drop is now much easier when dragging with a stylus. Previously the list of layers would scroll way too fast to be usable without a mouse or trackpad.

Brush Settings

  • More brush settings are available: hardness, opacity and spacing. Additionally, the effect of stylus pressure on the brush size & opacity can be customized.
  • Maximum brush size is increased from 100px to 1000px. Additionally, the brush size slider isn’t linear anymore. The slider is divided in 3 equal parts: from 1 to 10, from 10 to 100 and from 100 to 1000.
  • Thanks to the new brush settings, it is now possible to customize the brush settings to get an airbrush rendering as well as felt pen.
  • Brush settings are now per tool. The currently existing tools are Brush and Eraser. Switching between these tools will restore the brush settings you had set for said tool.

Brush Presets

  • A new Brush Presets panel is added: it contains presaved brush settings to allow you to switch much faster to your favorite settings. You can create your own Brush Preset by customizing the brush settings then using the “+” button of the Brush Presets panel.
  • Brush Presets are persistent between app relaunches. Active tool is restored when relaunching ArtOverflow. The Brush Preset that was selected when exiting ArtOverflow is also restored at relaunch time.

Currently known limitations

  • Small occasional stutters can happen while drawing with more than 15 layers. This is not related to high memory usage and will be improved in a later version.
  • Layers renaming cannot be cancelled

  • Bugfixes and other improvements depending on your feedback
  • Fix for the above limitations
  • Be able to move all the contents of a layer
  • Be able to import images in the current document as a new layer
