Business Model Update: To Subscribe or Not To Subscribe?

Previous business model

If you have registered on artoverflow.io more than a few days ago, it was stated that ArtOverflow would be subscription-free, and that buying a license would get you all minor updates. Meaning that a major update would require spending money again.

Why is it wrong?

However this model has a few notable flaws:

  • Given a major update that contains several new features, if one of these features is ready, it cannot be delivered before all the other features of that major update are ready. So we’re uselessly delaying features.
  • The user base is segmented between major versions, depending on who buys what. This means we either have to provide support for multiple versions, or to not support older versions. :disappointed_relieved:

New model

Considering the above points, we have decided to change the business model as follow:

  • You will have the choice between subscription, OR a lifetime license.
  • Whatever you choose, you always get the latest version! :slightly_smiling_face:
  • It is not set in stone yet but subscription would probably be around $2/month or $20/year, the lifetime license would be around $40 to $60.
  • This means that if you’re not totally sure yet about spending the full price, or find subscription more practical, you can!

One more thing

In addition to the above changes, we also plan to provide a free version of ArtOverflow! :tada:
This free version would most likely be limited on canvas size (2000x2000?) but without any other limitation.

This serves two purposes:

  • We want beginner artists to be able to use awesome tools without having to care about money!
  • This makes it easier for anybody to give a try to ArtOverflow and spread the word.

So how do you like it?
